Starting a small business brings immense pride, but it also carries a quiet, heavy burden of stress, isolation, and unpredictable financial anxiety. For many owners, the pressure to always appear strong and successful leads them to neglect their own mental health until burnout becomes unavoidable. Admitting that the mental toll has become too high is often the hardest first step, requiring a shift in perspective to realize that personal well-being is the absolute foundation of everything in life.
Overcoming these mental health challenges requires a deliberate shift from relentless grinding to sustainable boundaries and seeking help. For me, I needed to focus on prioritizing professional therapy and leaning on those around me. By treating mental fitness with the same strategic importance as everything else in life, people can transform how they handle daily crises, learning to view setbacks as temporary hurdles rather than personal, long-term failures.
Ultimately, navigating through mental health struggles transforms a person into their more authentic self. Emerging on the other side of depression fosters deep empathy, stronger boundaries, and a more sustainable model of success in all areas of life. By openly acknowledging and managing mental health in a community that can support the journey, we are moving toward a much healthier, and happier, society. The mandate of LoveYourself Canada is at the forefront of recognizing the need in the community and your support through attendance at this event and donations are helping to change lives.
I’m here to remind you that healing is possible—inside and out. You might know that axolotls are special because we can regenerate parts of our bodies, like limbs or even parts of our hearts. I believe we all share a different kind of power: the ability to heal our minds and hearts with patience, support, and care.
Just like I need clean water, the right environment, and balance to thrive, people also need safe spaces, healthy routines, and nurturing relationships. When life feels overwhelming, think of your wellness as a pond—if it’s murky and neglected, it’s hard to feel at peace. But with a little attention, rest, and kindness to yourself, the water can become clear again.
Healing doesn’t mean rushing or ignoring the hard parts. When I grow back a limb, it takes time, energy, and the right conditions. In the same way, mental health recovery is a journey, not an overnight change. Every small act of self-care—whether it’s journaling, reaching out for help, or taking a deep breath—helps create the environment where healing can happen.
So, take a lesson from me, your axolotl friend: give yourself the patience and care you would give a pond you wanted to see flourish. When you nurture your mental health and practice self-care, you create the conditions for your own kind of regeneration. Healing may look different for everyone, but it is always possible.
